how to start a career in this boon to our area
« on: February 03, 2012, 10:28:15 AM »
Hello, new to the forum.

I have been trying to start my career with one of the local companies in SW PA, northern WV, and Eastern OH (I live up i n the northern panhandle of WV).  My experience is in Environmental, Health & Safety, environmental remediation, and have supervisory experience.  I have worked with mud pumps, frac tanks, mixers, shakers, vacuum units, and sampling (dewatering type remediations).

I interviewed for an entry-level position in the cementing service unit so far, while I felt I aligned my skills and abilities with what they are looking for, I was "brushed off" from the recruiting manager due to " not living in the service area ".  I am available 24/7, willing to travel, and work my butt off to make this a reality.

What are they really looking for?

This post will start my blog, quest, or whatever you want to call it to "make it" a career in  hopes it will help others in the community who have the same dream as me.

I hope it helps :)

Thanks meangene !

yes, I have tried that site, and have sent many resumes to the companies located on that site.

Eastern Gateway community college (Steubenville, OH) has a program through shaleNET.org that I am participating in as well.  I have passed my pee test and background check to beable to be enrolled in the program.

I had a class B CDL, airbrake, tanker, and hazmat certs, however when I moved to WV I did not renew it.  I am going on Monday to get my WV CDL learners permit and should have no problem getting these endorsements on my license again.

-also- on Monday I heading down I-79 and hitting the EAST Royfurman HWY with a fist full of resume's and a thick skin and see what happens 8)

captains log 02/07/2012 ~ 15:22

My cold call interviews up and down the East Roy Furman Hwy is most likely to be fruitless.  I gather from information given by the "gate keepers" in this area that my intentions are mimmicked by others before me.  I am just glad my resume has been included on the "stack" of resumes they receive daily.  Blue Laugh I will have to go back to the play book for another strategy.

Please read my post in the open discussion forum located on this site reguarding environmental issues facing the oil and gas industry.

I took my TABE tests today @ EGCC (Steubenville, OH) to further my involvement in their ShaleNET.org program.

captain's log 02/10/201~ 16:27:

approached a company who is just starting to "improve" an access point to a future well not even 1/4 mile as a crow flies from my residence.  There was nobody onsite that could give me specific information on if or when their present employer was hiring.

Went to the Hancock County Courthouse to research the deed to my property to see if indeed I own underground mineral rights.  While there, spoke with paralegals from an undisclosed company who were doing the same thing ;)

Went to the local store Smith Oil and saw a free publication named "Shale Play" What excitement I had as I sat in the parking lot with my Cummins diesel ideling reading it cover to cover 8)

Went to the Jefferson County Ohio "one stop" and spoke with a very enthusiastic gentleman who gave me valuable resources to follow up on.

PM me if you are from the upper northern panhandle of WV or the Ohio river valley.  I have a contact you may be interested in if you are following the same dream as me. :)

Thanks, chasgas ! 8)

I am enrolled at Eastern Gateway Community College ShaleNET program in Steubenville, OH.  Classes don't start until 3/05/2012.
I passed my drug test and background check.

I hope the certification plus the contacts I make while in the program will help me gain employment in this field.

Sounds like you have the right attitude and work ethic.  Know that they are bringing a lot of workers in from TX and OK, and they have to pay a premium to house them here.  Being a local worker should be an advantage.  Hang in there and good luck to you!!
