Are Electric Vehicles the Answer or Just New Packaging?

Electric vehicles are interesting, but do consumers want them, are they affordable and are they anything more than a new way to package the same fuels?

In a recent conversation with a young neighbor in his 20's, he mentioned Elon Musk.  I told him that based on the Solar City factory debacle in Buffalo I had a low estimation of Musk's credibility. He suggested that I do more research into what Musk has done and accomplished since that time...and so I began to look into the projects Musk is involved in.

Those of us who remember when a computer was the size of a room and had less computing power than our present laptops - also probably less than the smart phones we carry in our pockets - might easily recognize we are in the infancy of electric and autonomous, driverless vehicles.  It would be folly to ignore the inexorable move in that direction and likely evolution of technologies associated with this move.

People who have seen the Tesla automobile have reviewed it favorably and recently the CEO of Volkswagen, the largest car manufacturer in the world, said its main competitor is Tesla--which presently manufactures 1 per cent as many autos as Volkswagen.

We are entering a new era of technology  where  fossil fuels may play a smaller role and yet undetermined role in transportation as well as energy generation.  Nonetheless, the future potential roles and applications of natural gas and its derivatives most likely are also presently undetermined.

YouTube has some interesting videos of interviews and panels on which Musk has participated as well as videos of Tesla automobiles and SpaceX. Those on this forum who are interested in energy, engineering and software might find those videos interesting, informative, and thought provoking.
